Another of our great neighborhood schools has been recognized by the State of California as a “Distinguished School” for 2006: Congratulations to Willow Glen Elementary School!
The Department of Education announced the award earlier this week, and the celebratory banners are already up around campus.
Excerpts from the school’s original application for recognition, posted on their website:
… Our community believes in our vision of success, and everyone actively and enthusiastically participates. It is evident in our classrooms, our support systems, and our students’ behavior.
… Our staff’s diversity contributes to an atmosphere where the diversity of students and families is appreciated. Classes learn about and celebrate holidays/customs of many cultures, such as Chinese New Year, Cinco de Mayo, Thanksgiving and Kwanzaa. English and Spanish-speaking parents bring their experiences into classrooms by reading stories every month.
… At monthly awards assemblies we recognize students as team players, good citizens and successful learners. Upper grade students tutor primary students, and Peace Coaches model responsible behaviors for peers.
… Through many activities, we create a web of relationships and high expectations that provide students with positive connections to school and community. Walking field trips to the library, fire station, a bookstore and parks provide enrichment. 100% of students join in service activities
… The WGE campus provides a safe learning and playing environment for all students and ample space for learning. Classrooms featuring educational displays and student work create a stimulating environment that reflects pride in student achievement. We demonstrate Tiger Pride through classroom and PTA clean up days, landscaping, and a child-themed mural painted by kids and a parent.
Along with 17 other schools in Santa Clara County, SJUSD’s Terrell Elementary and Cambrian’s Bagby School also received the honor this week.
