Independent Neighborhood News & Talking Points

Actually, it’s Deja Vu twice … or maybe even three times.
Alicia Upano writes for Silicon Valley Community Newspapers (SVCN), which include the WG Resident and the Campbell Reporter. In today’s edition of all three papers, she writes a story about Second Harvest Food Bank and its upcoming “I Skipped Lunch” promotion, set for June 8.
These sister papers often “share” stories when the articles transcend geographic description, or include citizens and business that cover more than one segment of the paper. With the recent acquisition of SVCN by Knight-Ridder, this excellent practice now results in local reporters getting called up to the majors.
So, Alicia’s story was printed three times on Wednesday: In the WG Resident: “Donate that lunch money and help stamp out hunger” … in the Campbell Reporter: “Skip lunch and donate $10 to Second Harvest to stop hunger” … and in the SJ Mercury News: “Food bank wants you to pass on lunch.”
The local SVCN papers printed full versions of the story, complete with extra quotations and additional details. Although the Mercury cut portions of the story to fit, the article did run in place of “Action Line,” which surely garnered a lot of attention for this worthy cause … and for Alicia’s writing talent.
