Independent Neighborhood News & Talking Points

To no ones surprise … and probably to almost no ones disappointment, the new corporate parent of Albertsons Supermarkets has announced that they will be closing their dilapidated store on the corner of Bird & Minnesota/Alma. Not much of a grocery store, nor much of a good neighbor, the store will close as part of a wider shutdown of 37 Northern California stores, including the three stores closest to you.
The chain is also closing their store on the corner of Southwest Expressway & Leigh and the store at Meridan & Foxworthy, leaving committed Albertsons shoppers with the choice of driving to the store at Camden & Union, the W. Capital Expressway store, or even further.

[...] While specific news about the old WG Albertsons located at Bird & Minnesota/Alma is not available, the closed store does not appear to be part of the recent acquisition by Save Mart: In June, Albertsons shut down 37 stores in Northern California, including 12 in Santa Clara County and five in Alameda County. The new deal does not include any shuttered Albertsons outlets, only stores in operation, Rockwell said. (Some Willow Glen residents have recently sent letters of protest to Councilman Ken Yeager after hearing that Save Mart, and not an upscale grocer such as Zanotto’s, could move into the old Albertsons facility on Bird Avenue. The status of that location is unclear.) … The latest Albertsons news from the SJ Mercury. [...]
