Independent Neighborhood News & Talking Points

Ever struggled to give directions to out-of-town friends trying to navigate to your house on our byzantine freeways and name-changing roads? Perhaps your task has become a little easier.
In late June, CalTrans updated the exit sign for the Bird Avenue ramp off of southbound Interstate 280, and it’s got an exit number … Exit 3B! (the northbound exit sign is still “unnumbered”).
Of course, all of California’s freeway exits have already been designated numbers; it’s just a matter of replacing the old signs over time. When the Highway 87 widening project is complete, those exits into WG will also have new numbers …
But don’t get too excited. By a fluke of geography, the Curtner ramp from Highway 87 north will also be Exit #3 … and from Hwy 87 southbound, 3B is Almaden Expressway and 3A will be Curtner. And Highway 87 itself (north and/or south) is already exit 3A off of I-280.
So maybe things may not really get any easier when those new exit numbers arrive.

The new signs went up over the past few weeks, and now Curtner Avenue is Exit 3 from Highway 87. Unless you are traveling southbound on 87, in which case it’s Exit 3B (Almaden Expressway messes up the symmetry in that direction).
Is this better?
As the Highway 87 Project nears completion, other sections of nearby roads are starting to get some attention.
The SJ Mercury’s November 3 edition of Roadshow brings this update on I-280:
