The weekly Metro magazine made another fact-finding stop in Willow Glen this month.
This time, Gary Singh’s “Silicon Alleys” column tells us more about the San Jose Elks Lodge than you might care to know: “Got Elk?” (September 6, 2006)
The San Jose Elks Lodge No. 522 sits on a wonderfully desolate stretch of Alma Avenue. Everyone has driven by the place for years, but no one knows what’s inside, so I just had to find out. To begin the adventure, my intrepid guide and I donned Hawaiian shirts and he took me through the parking lot, which doubles as an RV park. About 40 RVs call the place home. There’s even a 100-year-old caboose propped up at the far corner of the lot.
The Benevolent & Protective Order of the Elks are a “fraternal organization” with more than 1200 lodges located across the nation. Some of your neighbors are probably members … so they can enjoy the pool, which might be one of the hidden treasures of WG. … along with the caboose.

Metro's "Best Of SJ" ...
Apparently, Metro is continuing its PR campaign to promote the Elks Club. The Club not only gets the above-mentioned grand treatment from “Silicon Alleys,” but also warrants a made-up “Best Benevolent Order” award in last week’s annual Best of Silicon Valley edition.
You know it must be a cool place, right! Especially since it’s included in the paper’s made-up “Best of San Jose” section, rather than the “Best of Willow Glen” section. That’s more impressive, right?
