Independent Neighborhood News & Talking Points

WGx has been closely monitoring the WG Resident’s purchase by Knight-Ridder, followed by their purchase by McClatchy, followed by the sale of the SJMN to Denver-based MediaNews. Primarily, weve been on the lookout for changes in our neighborhood’s weekly newspaper.
After a few months of paying close attention, we’ve reached a conclusion: It’s the Mercury News that’s changed. Over the past few months, we’ve seen quite a few stories from the SVCN sister newspapers get called up to ‘The Merc,’ and last month a WGx reader commented that the big daily seemed to be getting smaller.
And over Labor Day Weekend, the Mercury ran at least three stories that had run previously in the WG Resident — WG Elementary Construction on Friday — a Founder’s Day preview on Saturday — and WG’s American Legion Post’s troubles on Sunday. Of course, they’ve been running other news stories, too … but we hope SVCN’s stable of young writers is being fairly compensated for the money their stories are saving MediaNews.
