The city has been under pressure to convert industrial land to housing. Under what circumstances should such conversion happen? Steve Tedesco: The effort that is taking place around the conversions near light-rail stations, for high-density housing, creates a circumstance that should allow discussion to take place.
The city is opening parks, community centers and libraries that it can’t afford to maintain. What would you do about that? The city needs to stop opening new facilities without identifying ongoing sources of operating expenses. There needs to be more realistic projections for operating income.
Is it time to give up on the quest to bring BART to downtown San Jose? It’s not time to give up. But it is past time to look at the cost effectiveness of funding BART tunneling under downtown San Jose. Tax increase increments are a logical way to fund it; however, the question is how much can we realistically generate with the current tax rate?
What’s your best idea for bringing revenue to San Jose? We need to continue to focus on job creation because jobs not only bring retail tax dollars, but they also bring business-to-business tax dollars to the city, increased property taxes and utility taxes.
What would be your top priority for San Jose once you were elected? I would want to seriously review traffic congestion and what we can do to improve moving the traffic flow throughout the area.
