[...] WGx reader and San Jose Metroblogger Joann Landers provided us with the harrowing details of trying to merge onto the Alma Street exit from southbound Highway 87 last month. Because that wasn’t challening enough for local drivers, CalTrans has made the entrance ramp from Alma to northbound 87 even tougher: A — Caltrans is trying to speed up work here and will meet with the contractor to see if they can change the configuration of the K-rail temporary barrier. The merge lane will be lengthened when work on the retaining wall next to the on-ramp is done in a few weeks. And when the widening on 87 is completed north of here in the summer, Alma traffic will have its own merge lane. [...]

The SJ Mercury's Roadshow column by Gary Richards got the same question from our local taxicab heroine. Here's how he responded:

Q Have you used the new Alma Avenue exit from south Highway 87? I hope this is not the final answer, as it is an accident waiting to happen. Words cannot describe it. A must see -- if you dare.

Taxi Lady Joann

A A dare! OK, I went out and -- Yikes!

Q There are two ramps. One is the newly opened Alma exit off of south 87. Two is the ramp from south Interstate 280 to 87. The problem is the point at which these ramps meet. There is no space to make a gradual merge. I put my blinker on and hope.

Taxi Lady Joann

A Anyone else (silly question, I know)?

The complete column: "Temporary fixes leave drivers in permanent state of anxiety"

Have you used it? I hope it will not be the final answer. This is an accident waiting to happen. Getting off 87 onto the off ramp is fine, but then there is absolutely no place to go as fast moving cars, on the two lanes coming off 280, seemingly have the right of way. I will be taking my taxi customers off at Park Av. or Almaden.
