Independent Neighborhood News & Talking Points
1 Feb
January and February are traditionally busy months for parents and students investigating new school choices for next Fall. If Willow Glen High School is on your list for next year, a recent look into school safety might be of interest to you.
Featured alongside other schools from around the county, WGHS was mentioned in a SJ Mercury News article over this past weekend: “Focus rises on school safety”
SJPD officer Francisco Ordaz spends four hours each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at his alma mater, Willow Glen High School, which he graduated from in 1989. Sgt. Jason Ta, an internal auditor with the SJPD who used to be a gang investigator, spends Fridays at the school. …
Willow Glen has not installed metal detectors or security cameras. Keeping the campus safe requires school staff, from principals to substitute teachers, to regularly carry walkie-talkies and monitor entryways for suspicious activity.
The police officers, who usually wear jeans, sneakers and SJPD polo shirts to blend in, provide an additional layer of protection for the school’s nearly 1,400 students.
Most days are unremarkable.
That’s good news.
