From the producers:

This is a very different time from when Godspell was first conceived in 1971. Through the years, the show has found an odd stereotype of “clown makeup” and “flower power”. But when you sit down and actually read the script, the show is nothing like that at all.

In fact, the script includes a message from composer Stephen Schwartz. He says that though times may change, the message of Godspell remains true. It’s not how you tell the story, but that you get the message across. He states examples of a company in Boston who recently performed the musical as a TV Reality Show or the 2001 National Tour that re-orchestrated the show for a new audience.

As Director of Willow Glen High School’s upcoming production, Josh Miyaji, has taken this idea and re-imagined Godspell for a new generation. The show is set in present day and deals with issues and problems that the public deals with everyday. The Disciples are made up of characters we see on a daily basis. A waitress, who is a single mother living pay check to pay check. A doctor who is so caught up with whether people live or die that she loses touch. A student who lacks focus and respect. The list goes on, but together they start a community that is based on love, hope and the desire to make the world a better place.

The ultimate message is: that you have faith, it doesn’t matter what you have faith in, just that you have it. With a rousing score and memorable songs, Godspell is sure to make you think, make you laugh and touch your heart.
