Independent Neighborhood News & Talking Points

The “Books for Treats” concept originally started right here in Willow Glen may be about to really take off!
The program, which encourages families to give away books rather than candy as Halloween treats, has also collected books and given them away as part of the Downtown WG festivities on October 31 for many years. Now, under the strength of expanded support from the San Jose Mercury News and and donations from The Bookman in San Diego, the program will give away even more books this year!
In fact, an article in the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s “Science Books & Films” magazine reports that founder Rebecca Morgan has more than 7000 books ready to go and is expanding the program into San Jose’s east side and down south into Orange County.
But first, she’s still accepting donations of books directly to the program:
What: Donate your gently read children’s books, which Books for Treats will hand out to children on Halloween instead of handing out candy. The program is expanding to Willow Glen and east San Jose.
When: From now until Oct. 30.
Where: Drop off books at Sienna Restaurant or Willow Glen Yoga, both of which are on Lincoln Avenue in San Jose.

Thanks for the article about Books For Treats! In addition, we’re looking for some help with book sorting on Tues., Oct. 23 from 8:30-12:30 at the Diabetes Society in the Garden Theater (Ste. 300), as well as on Halloween 9-noon, 3-5 handing out books in front of the Garden Theater. Let us know if you can help.

Thanks to all who supported Books For Treats this year. It was fun having Mayor Reed and Pierluigi help hand out books. We gave out over 3500 books
this year on the Avenue before running out. We also gave out 2000 in the East Side at Ida Jew school.
