It’s nothing but a juicy little rumor. But sometimes, that’s all WGx is good for … along with the occasional bad pun.

Neighbors near the corner of Curtner & Lincoln are wondering if the mystery “single user” mentioned in Friday’s WG Resident article might be Tomato Thyme:

Douglas Scolari requested the zoning change from residential to commercial pedestrian, which enables the parcel to continue being used as a parking lot next to the adjacent commercial building, according to San Jose planner Rachel Roberts.

“There is no development being proposed at this time for this site, just parking improvements and landscaping,” she said.

Scolari had also applied for a permit to demolish the former SilverLeaf Antique Store building on the adjacent 0.57-acre parcel so the family could construct a new commercial building that would include outdoor seating. The application has since been retracted.

“We had begun the application process with the intent to take the current building down and rebuild a smaller strip mall,” said Brett Scolari, Scolari’s son and acting project manager. “We recently found a single user that will use the current building and do their own renovations.”

Originally converted from the Stuft Pizza chain in 2004 by John and Holly Smith, Tomato Thyme has been located near Safeway and RiteAid on the southeast corner of Hamilton & Meridian. An effort to expand the restaurant capacity with a new patio was derailed by a lack of parking at that site a little less than a year ago.

Of course, maybe the patio application for the Curtner site was withdrawn because Tomato Thyme decided against that location altogether. For now, the building will not be demolished but will instead be upgraded by its future tenant. Is it Tomato Thyme? That’s just a rumor …
