Here’s a new twist on public schools: Online Playdates. Sort of.
Several grassroots efforts have begun to connect incoming Kindergarten students — and their families — with each other before school starts in the Fall. And most of them are using “Yahoo Groups” for organization, recruiting, and communication:
Many of the efforts are focused on specific schools, but at least one is designed for all kids entering any WG public school this fall — and they’re hosting a real non-virtual playdate this Saturday:
Come to a community playdate on Sat. May 3, 2008 10-12 at River Glen Park. Contact Holly Barr at (408) 887-3225 holly@hollybar.net with any questions or if you want to help! We have a group from Schallenberger and are looking to start a group for Galarza, Canoas and Willow Glen Elementary!
Many of you have heard the ancient African proverb, “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” We live in a wonderful neighborhood with great neighbors and friends surrounding us. Even if you are just thinking about what school you want your child to attend, now is the time to meet some families to see where the best fit might be and create our school community and culture. If you are like me and want your child to go play around the corner with his friend that he attended school with earlier that day, then this is the place to be. We are here to strengthen and build the neighborhood community and school and we need you to help to create our village.
Thank you!

By the way – and totally unrelated to Willow Glen – an incoming-Kindergarten parent in San Francisco is in the middle of a blog telling the story of one parent’s search for a kindergarten in San Francisco. Check it out, and be thankful it’s not that hard down here. Or is it? Anyone want to blog about it? WGx will host!

I’m the instigator of these online playdates! I’ve been a member of a local playgroup that’s used Yahoo groups for years to communicate and set up playdates. I also started a Silicon Valley Networking Moms yahoo group for moms (and dads!) who are home with their kids and run their own businesses. I found it a real challenge to attend the traditional networking luncheons when I really wanted to be with my 4 year-old daughter and 1 year-old son.
Anyway, the Willow Glen Elementary Kindergarten 2008-9 Group I started is not about community, or business for me. It’s simply about wanting to make the transition to kindergarten easier for my daughter and other kids she’ll be in class with.
My daughter has so many friends from our original infant playgroup, from preschool, and from many classes she’s taken. Her community is already so much larger than mine was as a kid. But we don’t know very many of our neighbors who she’ll be going to school with for years to come.
I think starting kindergarten can be hard enough without the added stress of trying to make new friends. Imagine how much happier our kids will be and more they’ll learn if they’re already comfortable with who’s in class with them!
I have such fond memories of walking to school with all my neighborhood friends. We all knew almost everyone who lived on our street! These days we live in such global communities, yet spend so much time in virtual worlds, we hardly know our neighbors. Rather than overwhelm our kids with introductions to even more kids who will go to different schools, or fill up our calendar with more driving to playdates across town, let’s get to know the families of the kids our kids will be in class with, and help our kids have a cohesive kindergarten class!
If you have a kindergartener who’ll be starting at Willow Glen Elementary in the fall this year, please join our group!
