Independent Neighborhood News & Talking Points

Archive for May, 2008

Willow Glen is well-regarded as a family-friendly neighborhood, right? Here’s another way that another of your neighbors helps improve family life … by helping families create or expand themselves.

WGx Member Rick Bernard is reporting on RickBernardAcupuncture.com that his infertility treatments have resulted in five new pregnancies over the last four weeks:

Adding to the excitement of the recent news coverage Rick’s acupuncture infertility treatments received last month, the Center for Complementary Medicine would like to announce and congratulate the five new pregnancies that have begun in the past four weeks … all with the help of Chinese Medicine!

We feel blessed and humbled by the creation of new life …

WGx certainly adds its congratulations, too! If you’re curious about how acupuncture can help solve your medical troubles or infertility frustrations, Rick’s office is located at 1314 Lincoln Ave - Ste 2F (upstairs).

  • Heat Subsides; Wind to Increase

A short little heat wave gives us a lot to talk about here in the Santa Clara Valley, but at least the “Excessive Heat” has ended with pleasant temperatures and light overnight breezes.

But if you still want to talk about the weather, Mother Nature has some more fun on the way later this week: Wind.

The National Weather Service has issued a “Special Weather Statement” and a “Hazardous Weather Outlook” for our area for later this week.

The WGx Executive Summary: 35 MPH Winds are possible Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • LIVE Updates: WG Relay for Life

As promised, WGx is proud to provide Twitter-based up-to-the-minute text message updates from the Willow Glen Relay for Life, the 24-hour marathon Saturday-Sunday, at the Willow Glen high School track: (more…)

P5140006It’s a busy weekend, but WGx thought you’d also want to know that our neighbors in Campbell are hosting their annual downtown Art & Wine festival this weekend.

P5140010So … … if you’re going to Boogie on the Bayou, maybe you could ask them to clean up their Octoberfest signs next time before they put up new promotional litter. This is a recurring problem with the company that posts these things, and it’s this sort of bad citizenship that can lead to boycotts. Or something like that. Clean it up!

  • Arts, Crafts, Clay … Sale!

Ever notice how the first and third weekends n May are crazy?! Everyone hosting an event must be steering clear of Mother’s Day and Memorial Day…

This third weekend in May brings lots completely separate events that are kind of related … in an artsy not really kind of way. (more…)

  • Bella: Everywhere But Home

Even if you haven’t seen her … you’ve seen her picture. Bella is everywhere. Everywhere but home, that is.

The latest update from her owners is posted on Craigslist. As of 10:00 am this morning, Bella was spotted near StoneGate Park:

The Professional Pet Detectives & Trackers are actively chasing and tracking Bella who has just been spotted by the creek South East of Tully Road near StoneGate Park.

HURRY HURRY - PLEASE RUSH IN, SET UP A PERIMETER SOUTH OF TULLY ROAD AT TUERS ROAD - CALL 891-4239 FOR DIRECTIONS - DO NOT YELL, DO NOT CHASE, BELLA IS ONLY GOING TO COME TO HER OWNERS, HELP GUIDE TERRI AND STEVE RIGHT TO HER.

There is also additional information and a request for volunteer help on Bella’s own website:

5/17 - Saturday will be the next organized search, starting @ 10am

5/15 - Terri is asking for volunteers Th-F-S to put up new 11×17 flyers in the new search areas. We are hopeful that Bella will be found quickly as the scent dogs are indicating she is heading into more affluent, english-speaking neighborhoods which will be a huge improvement.

Additionally, Terri is looking for volunteers on Thursday morning to make new large white poster signs and volunteers Thursday night and Friday to position these posters in the new search territory.

And notes and comments on Bella sightings and search efforts are routinely being posted to the WGNA eList by our WG neighbor Laurie on Harmil; and she’s posting her updates on WGx, too.

  • Thanks almost entirely to the creative work of WG’s own Scott Schnaars — whose wife Holly is a Cancer Survivor — WGx is honored to host a special live online event this weekend:

WGx can’t really be certain, but it appears that the skies above Willow Glen may be a bit quieter for the next two weeks.

The SJ Mercury News is reporting that the flight pattern for landing airplanes at Mineta SJC International Airport is shifting one mile to the east, as an airport runway undergoes FCC-mandated upgrades:

To meet new Federal Aviation Administration regulations, Mineta San Jose International Airport is closing down one of its two major runways for two weeks to add new airfield signs and extend lighting further down the runway.

The runway that is being closed - 30 Left on the western part of the airfield - is typically used for arriving flights, so the easternmost runway - 30 Right - will temporarily handle both arrivals and departures, said airport spokesman David Vossbrink.

As a result, flight paths will be shifted about a mile further east than currently.

Of course, our gain is another neighborhood’s loss. Residents of the Rosemary Gardens and Washington-Guadalupe neighborhoods will probably experience more noise during construction.

Residents are encouraged to call the Airport’s 24-hour Noise Report Recorder at (408) 452-0707 to report incidents of excessively loud aircraft or possible curfew violations. By accurately reporting the time and date of the incident, residents can help the Airport to contact aircraft operators and work with them to reduce noise over neighborhoods.

You will probably contact the SJC Noise Monitoring Center someday, but hopefully not anymore this month.

    Bike to Work Anyway Day?

Technically, Thursday is “Bike to Work Day” across the South Bay and San Francisco. Of course, it’s also smack dab in the middle of the National Weather Service’s “Excessive Heat Advisory” … so, you’ll have to decide if it’s going to be Bike to Work Anyway Day. (more…)

For anyone who missed the WG Home Tour a few weeks ago, here’s another chance to peruse your neighbors’ mansions — or at least one of them. This news comes from the SVCN Saratoga News, which promoted the show in a print edition earlier this month: (more…)
