It comes too late for Breanna, but the City has decided to paint new crosswalks at the corner where the girl and run over and killed back in June:

Nearly five weeks after a Hoover Middle School student was hit and killed by a car, new crosswalks and a bicycle safety program are in the works as part of a broad plan to calm traffic in the neighborhood.

Roughly 80 Rose Garden area neighbors packed a room in the Hoover Community Center on July 17 to hear San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and other city and school officials outline safety measures and offer suggestions. City transportation workers plan to paint crosswalks this summer on Park Avenue at several corners near the school, and a study of traffic patterns is planned around Hoover, Trace Elementary School and Lincoln High School.

A separate study will be conducted to address signal timing on Park Avenue and the crush of cars on Sandringham Way and Selborn Place during Hoover's drop-off and pick-up times.

Many San Jose schools have struggled to keep loading zones safe, and changes in road features and police enforcement will be made under a recently approved, citywide traffic-calming policy that tries to direct money to the most dangerous areas.

Neighbors around Hoover are still reeling from the girl's death. ...

Sadly, there isn't much else to say ...

San Jose sixth-grader fatally struck by SUV on her way home from school

The last day of school and the promise of summer break ended tragically Thursday when a 12-year-old girl riding her bike home was struck and killed by a car one block from Hoover Middle School.

Breanna Slaughter-Eck, a sixth grader at the school in San Jose's Rose Garden, was struck as she was crossing Selborn Place at Park Avenue just minutes after school ended at noon.
