The brazen daylight robbery was shocking enough. That it ended in the death of a local grocer makes it even more tragic. A Peace March in honor of Vahid Hosseini will begin at Sacred Heart Church on Willow Street, not far from our Willow Glen neighborhood:

A “Stop the Violence Peace March” will be held Sunday in San Jose in memory of Vahid Hosseini, a grocer who was shot and killed on May 23 as he was making a bank deposit south of downtown.

The event begins at noon in front of Sacred Heart Church, 325 Willow Street. A number of local politicians, business leaders and community activists will be speaking, says Cassandra Hosseini, the victim’s daughter. The march begins at 12:30 p.m., heading east on Willow Street, north on South First Street, and east on E. Santa Clara Street to City Hall where everyone will gather outside the Rotunda. …

Hosseini, 47, was shot in the Bank of the West parking lot at 1010 South First Street just before 4:30 p.m., according to San Jose police. Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital and he died 11 days later.

There will be a wide range of speakers both before the march and afterwards at City Hall. The official program begins at noon, with comments from Assembly Member Jim Beall, Supervisor Pete McHugh, District Attorney Dolores Karr, Council Member Sam Liccardo, Dr. Marquita Byrd (Martin Luther King Association), and Jim Cogan (President of the Crime Stoppers Board of Directors). Speakers at City Hall will begin promptly at 1:30 pm, and will include Mayor Chuck Reed, Vice Mayor Dave Cortese, Police Chief Rob Davis, Dr. Nabi Raza Abidi, Dr. Marquita Byrd, Clarissa Moore (Silicon Valley Faces), and Bud LoMonico (Board Member of Crime Stoppers).

Anyone with information about the shooting should call detectives Paul Kelly or Anthony Hattey, (408) 277-5283. To provide information anonymously, call (408) 947-STOP. You may also consider donating to the reward fund or to the family.
