It’s probably too far away from WG to mean much to us yet, but Santa Clara County is moving forward with its plan for a mixed-use development on the site of County Fairgrounds.
The SJ/SV Business Journal reports that the development team includes several Bay Area companies:
Catellus Development Group said it was selected as the preferred developer for a major new mixed-use project in San Jose on the site of the county fairgrounds. …
The company said its preliminary vision for this project incorporates a network of streets and paths that encourage walking and cycling, office and retail buildings that feature green building technology, community gathering places and parks, and affordable housing.
The county will host two community open houses at the Fairgrounds prior to the Board of Supervisors workshop on Aug. 26 to introduce the recommended developer to the community. The open houses will be Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m.
The project won’t be terribly visible from WG, but might lead to some traffic impact for those using the Curtner Exit from Highway 87. You also have to figure that the stores and restaurants at The Plant will appreciate the extra business.
It also remains to be seen if the Fairgrounds redevelopment will out pace the Almaden-to-Curtner exit ramp project, and be completed first.

COUNTY TO HOLD PUBLIC FORUMS ON FAIRGROUNDS DEVELOPMENT
In 2007, the Board of Supervisors directed the County Executive to initiate the process for redevelopment of the County Fairgrounds. The County has been searching for a developer to create a proposal for a mixed use of housing and commercial development as well as continued public uses on the existing grounds. After reviewing qualified proposals, a five-member outside selection panel has unanimously suggested Catellus Development Group to manage the development process.
At the September 9 Board of Supervisors meeting, the County Executive is expected to recommend that the Board adopt the preliminary vision for the project and approve Catellus as the developer. Before that happens, though, residents will have an opportunity to meet the developer and give their input to help the Board make its decision.
The County will host two community Open Houses at the Fairgrounds’ Fiesta Hall on Wednesday, August 13, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., and Thursday, August 21 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Every half-hour there will be a brief presentation from staff with an opportunity at each presentation for questions from the community. On August 26 at 10 a.m., the Board of Supervisors will hold a public workshop to review the results of the year-long developer selection process and provide an opportunity for further community comment.
The Fairgrounds are comprised of 150 acres of County-owned land located fully within the boundaries of the City of San Jose. Over the next 18 months, the developer - once officially selected - along with the City will conduct extensive public outreach around the proposed development in accordance with the City’s zoning and planning policies. Although the County will need to approve any sales and leases of the land, the final development proposal will be approved by the City. However, there will be many opportunities for public participation along the way. Construction is expected to begin in the next few years.
[...] They live here already, and some of them even live amongst us. The ceremonies started last week at the Fairgrounds, and continue today. As an aside, you might want to avoid Curtner Avenue east of Highway 87 today [...]
