In the Hole: Kids … Then a Tree

While students enrolled in public schools across WG were wrapping up their official instructional year with celebrations and early dismissals, a certain group of kids was still hard at work in a big part of the curriculum. Sort of.

A local coalition of homeschool families spent the morning digging a big hole between the playgrounds at River Glen Park, preparing for a special tree planting exercise. Half a dozen shovels and almost twenty kids — plus a few extras who were just at the park to “play” — were busy digging the whole for the delivery of a new tree from SJ’s Our City Forest.

It’s been a few years since the last tree in that space died, itself planted when the park was renovated several years ago. And the homeschoolers — who regularly hold their physical education sessions at the park — figured it was time for a new one!
