Did you notice? Were you waiting for the big announcement? Pins and needles hoping your vote would make a difference? … actually maybe it would have.
The Willow Glen Resident will not be hosting its annual “Best of Willow Glen” reader poll for 2009. In an email to WGx, executive editor Dale Bryant encouraged WGx to announce the decision … if for no other reason than to see if anyone else missed it:
We didn’t plan a Best of WG for this year because we didn’t get a very good response last year. It’s been our impression that sometimes these special sections kind of run out of steam after a while.
If we were to do another one next year, we would probably approach it a little differently. We are still talking about it.
WGx was just as guilty as everyone else last year, completely failing to publish anything about the 2008 results. We’ve covered the results in years past (sometimes also remarking on the same polls conducted by the Mercury News, Metro, and the Wave).
To be honest, WGx has usually covered such ‘Best of” lists with a tongue-in-cheek approach, understanding that they are often self-fulfilling prophecies that anoint the frequent advertisers in each publication (or generate future frequent-advertisers).
In 2006, WGx even started its own “Willow Glen Mosts” category of posts:
Lots of places tally votes and award “Best Of …” certificates on a regular basis. WGx prefers to make things up, and designate the results as “Willow Glen Mosts,” a throwback to your days in high school and the yearbook’s effort to neatly categorize everybody.
So where is this going? … We don’t know. Does Willow Glen need a ‘Best of” List (or is everything here just equally great)? Should WGx host the “2009 Best of Willow Glen’ polling on its own, with some sort of twist?
Well, let’s find out with the first official WGx Poll: Should there be a “Best of WG” 2009 Edition? … vote so your vote can be counted, and perhaps counted again. And feel free to use the “Other” comment line to add a category you;’d like to see in a poll. If we do one.
Fine print: vote all you can (reset your cookies; alter your IP address; we don’t care). This is a non-binding poll, and WGx reserves the right to ignore the results. Or make up our own.
