Classic Car Show at Mojo

You might need a calendar program to keep track of all of the Classic Car shows in the neighborhood, but you can usually rely on the weekly get-together of car enthusiasts every Thursday at the corner of Bird & Minnesota.

Almost as soon as Mojo Burger opened it’s WG location, there’s been a matching car show on Thursday nights.

But this week, they take it up a notch … for their 2nd Annual Classic Car Show, hosted by Mojo Burger. They are once again combining with the Rockabilly Model agency for a Fashion Show at 6:30 pm, followed by a model photo shoot.

DSCF2387The last energetic installment of Music in the Glen plays out this Thursday, August 14, at Willow Glen Elementary. Don’t miss it!

In today’s post, WGx proudly presents pictures from this past week’s performance, featuring local band Sage, including a shot of the wondering horn section. Additional pictures of crazy dancing and other playground frivolity are available in the right-hand column further down the page.

DSCF2363Special Donation Request: As part of the season finale, organizers are asking for donations of new socks to be brought to the final concert. The Kiwanis Club of WG will donate collected socks to homeless shelters and others in need of warm clothes this winter.

Library Books Due Back Today

No, it’s not a fancy new reminder service provided by WGx … unless your own library books actually are due back today. ;-)

Today is the day that the new collection is set to arrive at the brand new Willow Glen Branch Library! The official Grand Opening is still scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 2008.

If you can’t wait until August 23, you can make a donation in support of the library, and join others for a special Donor Preview Event on August 20. There is still time to support the new branch and have your name — or the name of a business or organization — added to the donor wall at the entrance of the library.

  • Donors at $100 -$999 will be listed on the Community Wall
  • Donors at $1000-$4999 will be listed on the Legacy Wall
  • Donors at $5000+ will be on the Laureate Wall

There are also opportunities to have specific areas of the library sponsored by individuals or businesses with special plaques thanking them. Contributions of $1000 and above can be paid over a three year period.

Please visit www.sjplf.org/donationform.pdf for the pledge form.

September 7, 2008

Mark your calendars for a fun day to renew old friendships, dance to some great music, and support local schools.

The Willow Glen Foundation is reaching out to Alumni on September 7, from 1:00 to 5:00, on the WGHS campus.

Alums from every WGHS class are invited to bring their children – and grandchildren – and have fun getting caught up with their Ram buddies.

“Honorary” Alums are welcome, too! The “Garage Band” will play music that everyone can dance to, and there will be games and raffles, and tours of the campus, a BBQ meal for purchase, and a “Ram Shop” with themed items to buy.

Midnight Mummy Movie

This Thursday night, WG’s own Cinelux Almaden Theater is hosting a midnight preview of the latest “Mummy”movie sequel, starring Brendan Fraser.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor opens in most theaters on Friday, August 1 … making the midnight premiere right here in Willow Glen your first chance to see the film.

Tickets are $9 for adults and $675 for kids and seniors. And you can buy them online (fee-free!). Makes you feel special, doesn’t it? ;-)

D6’s Drive-In Movie Night?

It’ll be just like the old fashioned drive-ins, right? ;-)

The Willow Glen Movie Night was so successful last year, that it will return this summer for a second showing, hosted by Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio. This time around, it’ll be “Cars: The Movie” (yeah, the Disney one), scheduled for 6:30 pm at Willow Street Park.

In August, I will be hosting my 2nd Annual Movie Night and Safety Fair at Willow Street Park. Last year’s movie night was a success. Over 500 residents came out to see Happy Feet and Schurra’s chocolates gave out complimentary candy. This year it will be held on August 29, 2008.

– Pierluigi Oliverio

By complete coincidence, WGx was on a tour of Bramhall Willow Street Park this morning. Note to Councilmember: If the movie is going to be shone in the amphitheater, you might want to turn on the sprinklers so the grass is alive by the end of August … ;-)

——

Also, if cars aren’t your thing — and you would rather watch bees — Oliverio is presenting a Rosegarden Movie Night a week earlier, on Friday, August 22. The RG equivalent will be hosted at the Rose Garden, featuring Bee Movie.

Safety Fair at River Glen

SafetyFairPAL

Local Realtor Holly Barr – hey! I’ve heard of her – and Willow Glen PAL Soccer are teaming up to host a special community Safety Fair on Saturday, August 16, at River Glen Park.

Along with the soccer league’s festive “Pre-Season Games,” the entire community is invited to meet representatives of the SJ Fire Depart and the SJPD Mounted Police Unit – yes, the horses!

Give Blood This Month

Whether or not you consider the corner of Hamilton & Leigh to still be in Willow Glen, there will be a Blood Drive there on Saturday, June 19, hosted by the First Congregational Church.

The Stanford Blood Center will be collecting blood from 9:00 until 2:00 at the church, 1980 Hamilton Avenue. Make an appointment if you can.

Some might argue its the “real” Willow Glen music event of the summer, with apologies to a certain street dance that seems to appeal to a broader geographical audience.

Hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Willow Glen, it’s Music in the Glen … Thursdays between July 10 and August 14:

Thursdays … 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Willow Glen Elementary School , Quad Area
Bring A Lawn Chair or Blankets for Seating!
All Food Sales Benefit the School and Local Charities!

July 10 — Flashback
July 17 — The Road Dogs
July 24 — Groove Kings
July 31 — The Hitmen
Aug 7 — Sage
Aug 14 — Silicon Valley House Rockers

Of course, the concerts will include great music and a variety of local vendors selling their wares, including beverages from WGx Member Elva’s Coffee Stop!

And they may still be looking for kids to sing the National Anthem as part of each concert. Check it out!

Those in the know call it SYTYCD, but you can call it So You Think You Can Dance, airing on Wednesdays (mostly) this summer on FOX.

Support Katee SheanAnd if you haven’t heard already, you should be cheering for Katee Shean. The 20-year-old contestant hails from Willow Glen’s Palm Haven neighborhood:

Palm Haven’s own Katee Shean on FOX TV!

Katee Taira Shean was born and raised in San Jose, CA. She is a graduate of Pioneer High School and has completed her sophomore year at Chapman University in Orange, CA. She started dancing at the age of 4. She auditioned for the “So You Think You Can Dance” television show in Los Angeles. Additional auditions with thousands of other hopeful candidates were held in major cities throughout the country. She was one of 200 dancers selected to advance to the next level of competition held in Las Vegas. After a week of grueling competition, 20 dancers remained.

Of course, it’s not the first time Katee’s been competing for prize money … she won a $10,000 scholarship two years ago when she competed in a famous annual Beach Blanket Babylon scholarship contest.

Katee also teaches dance in Southern California while attending college. If you’ve missed the news so far, the magic of the internet will allow you to catch-up by viewing video of Katee’s various dance routines.

Katee’s dad has been doing his part, distributing fliers (seen here posted inside Willow Street) encouraging everyone to vote! And in case you were planning on voting early and often … in order to vote for Katee, you have be watching the show’s broadcasts, during which you get to call a specific toll-free number to cast your vote.
