Last year the San Jose Eagles took 215 disadvantaged children Christmas shopping at Target. Each child received $150 to buy presents for their families and themselves:
These children in addition to need were selected because they had shown personal improvement over the last year in areas such as grades, attendance, behavior and attitude. 26 were from Special Olympics, 120 children were selected by nine principles from schools in the San Jose Unified School District, 40 children were from families in the Santa Clara County CALworks program that provides job training for parents on assistance, 22 were from New Horizons which helps with the education needs of homeless children and 7 children that had recently lost one or both parents were referred from the San Jose Police Officers Association. The shopping spree was held at Target which opened one hour early for the Eagles. Each child had a Volunteer escort and received $150 to buy Christmas gifts for themselves and their family.
WGx has recently received word that fundraising for 2007 is behind schedule. … (more…)
